Turkish Sarma - Stuffed Grape Leaves With Olive Oil

Sarma is a Turkish dish belonging to the dolma (dolma means “stuffed” in English) food family. You can see different dolma and sarma variations primarily found in the cuisines of the former Ottoman Empire countries, from the Middle East to the Balkans and Central Europe. It is actually a very versatile dish, with many variations created across the centuries. Today, I want to show you some pictures of my very own “Zeytinyağlı Sarma” – “Stuffed Grape Leaves With Olive Oil”. 😊

“Sarma” which is one of the most popular food in Turkish cuisine means '"wrapped" in English and as you can see from the pictures of my very own sarma, it is made up of aromatic rice (seasoned with onion, cinnamon, salt, pepper, allspice, pine nuts and a little bit sugar) being rolled in grape leaves.

Sarma can be stuffed by mixing rice with different ingredients such as meat (beef or lamb) or dried fruits and it can be served both hot or cold. Typically, when meat is added in the mixture it is served hot, but the one i usually make, which is “Zeytinyağlı Sarma” – “Stuffed Grape Leaves With Olive Oil” does not contain any meat and it is usually served cold – I think it is a very nice food for vegetarians as well.

“Zeytinyağlı Sarma” would be a very nice appetizer which we call “meze” and it can be a very healty snack when combined with yogurt. As you can see in the pictures it is very common in Turkey to eat sarma or other types of dolma together with yougurt – I can say that sarma and yogurt is literally a perfect match for most of us! 😊

Hope you visit Turkey and try sarma and other local Turkish food in person.

Lots of love. 😊

Dilek
